Freshwater Aquarium FAQs

How often should I do a water change in a freshwater aquarium?

Most freshwater tanks do well with a 10–20% water change every one to two weeks. Heavily stocked tanks, or ones without live plants, may need more frequent changes to keep ammonia and nitrate in check. Always test your water parameters rather than going by a fixed schedule alone.

How long does it take to cycle a new fish tank?

A full nitrogen cycle — where beneficial bacteria establish themselves to process ammonia and nitrite — typically takes four to six weeks. You can speed this up with bottled bacteria starters or by seeding the filter with media from an established tank, but it's worth testing water parameters before adding a full stock of fish.

Can shrimp and fish live together in the same tank?

Many freshwater shrimp, like cherry or amano shrimp, coexist fine with small, peaceful fish. The risk is predation — larger or more aggressive species (many cichlids, bigger barbs) will eat shrimp, especially young ones. Dense planting and hiding spots help shrimp populations survive alongside fish.

How many fish can I safely keep in my aquarium?

The old "one inch of fish per gallon" rule is a rough starting point at best — it ignores adult size, swimming behavior, and filtration capacity. A more reliable approach is researching the adult size and temperament of each species and stocking conservatively, then watching ammonia/nitrite levels as you add fish gradually.

Do I need both a filter and a heater for a freshwater tank?

A filter is essential for almost every freshwater aquarium to handle biological and mechanical filtration. A heater is only necessary if you're keeping tropical species (most popular aquarium fish) or if your room temperature fluctuates outside the 72–82°F range most freshwater fish prefer.
